Why Eunos and Miata? The MX-5’s Many Names
While “MX-5” is the universal badge for Mazda’s iconic roadster, fans around the world know it by different names and each one tells a story.
In Japan, the first-generation MX-5 was sold under Mazda’s upscale sub-brand Eunos, and was officially called the Eunos Roadster. This version often featured unique JDM touches not found in export models - making it a cult favourite among enthusiasts and import lovers alike.
In North America, the same car was introduced as the Mazda Miata - a name chosen to evoke a friendly, approachable image. “Miata” comes from an old German word meaning “reward,” and for many drivers, that’s exactly what the car has been: a joyful, pure driving experience.
Despite the different names, they all share the same DNA: lightweight, rear-wheel-drive fun with a focus on balance and driver connection. Whether you call it MX-5, Miata, or Eunos Roadster, it’s all part of the same timeless legacy.
